The Wombats bite the dust – hopefully to rise again

wombat sad
THE much beloved Wombat Jazz Band has been a fixture at the Elsternwick Hotel on the third Monday of the month since 1997, with a passing parade of regular personnel and visiting sit-ins, and a repertoire heavily weighted on the side of Australian compositions.

Very sadly we have to announce that this residency is no more as of January 2014. But knowing the energy and resilience of Judy Taylor’s and Bill Kerr’s group we can only hope that some clever publican will recognise the special place the Wombats occupy in the hearts of their existing loyal followers, and their potential to create new audiences for the lucky pub/venue which provides a new home for them.

While we keep up our spirits waiting for the happy return of The Wombats, here’s a sample of one of their boisterous tracks – BACK TO BALLARAT – from their CD Are You Having Any Fun?. Click on the CD cover to hear it.

  1. Hi Bill and Judy. I hope your enjoy your well deserved retirement. I have always been taught there are no endings, only new beginnings, I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I have spent many long hours listening to and playing with the Wombats and it was always a joy.
I too have pretty much moved away from music and I am concentrating on my art and loving it.
    Cheers Ken Richards

  3. I concur with John Roberts sentiments. I have seen the Wombats perform in several venues in Melbourne. It is one of the great trad bands that in the main sticks to many Australian standards. Judy Taylor and Bill Kerr and the band deserve more exposure.
Publicans these days are not interested in good music, just money through the till.
I hope some understanding pub or hotel realise the talents of the band and give them a go.

  4. So sad good luck with new venue

  5. When will (even new) publicans learn that “bums on seats” is what is commercially viable. The “Wombats” filled the place even on a Monday night, with their brand of rollicking jazz with an Australian flavour.
(It was the only jazz venue to which we could walk from home, could meet old friends, and watch the No. 67 “streetcars” swing around the bend). I was always welcomed for a sit-in. What a pity, what a pity!
I hope the Wombats soon acquire another gig close to home.
